S. African Opposition Leader Condemns Anti-Migrant Protests as ‘Afrophobia’

(MENAFN) South Africa’s opposition figure Julius Malema has criticized recent anti-immigration marches, describing them as expressions of “Afrophobia” and defending migrants from other African countries against blame for domestic economic challenges.

Speaking at a conference organized by the South African Communist Party in Boksburg, Malema argued that migrants from countries such as Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Nigeria, and Somalia should not be held responsible for unemployment, inequality, or deteriorating public services in South Africa.

The event brought together left-leaning political and labor groups aiming to strengthen coordination and political engagement among progressive movements. While invited, the African National Congress declined to participate, stating that it did not view the gathering as aligned with leftist principles.

Malema used the platform to discuss broader global economic and political trends, arguing that the current global capitalist system intensifies inequality and reduces individuals to economic instruments. He linked these dynamics to broader social issues including unemployment, debt burdens among workers, environmental degradation, and rising political tensions.

He also argued that while formal apartheid in South Africa has ended, structural economic inequalities persist, particularly in areas such as land ownership, financial control, and key sectors of the economy.

The remarks come amid ongoing debate in South Africa over migration, economic inequality, and public service pressures, issues that continue to shape political discourse and social tensions within the country.
